Omron Sensor Cross-Reference and Replacement Guide

OMRON publishes clear discontinued/recommended-replacement data for many legacy E2E proximity sensors migrating to E2E NEXT, and a full E3Z photoelectric lineup with NPN/PNP counterparts. This guide pulls both together with the checks that decide whether a mapped replacement actually works in your machine.

Quick Answer

OMRON states that legacy E2E DC 2-wire / 3-wire model groups such as E2E-X...D..., E2E-X...E... and E2E-X...F... have migrated to the E2E NEXT family. For exact discontinued references, OMRON's recommended-replacement database provides model-level successors. Use those official records as the starting point, then verify output type, NO/NC logic, sensing distance, body diameter, shielding, cable or connector, wiring, indicator behavior and the machine input circuit.

SELECTION WARNING

Don't replace by thread size and distance alone

What can stop the machine even when the sensor physically fits

Do not replace an OMRON sensor only because the thread size and nominal sensing distance look similar. NPN vs PNP, NO vs NC, shielded vs unshielded, pinout, cable length and connection method can stop the machine even when the sensor physically fits.

What the official table does not mean

A recommended successor is not automatically a drop-in replacement for every installation. The old PLC input, wire colors, connector pinout, indicator logic, mounting depth and nearby-metal conditions still need to be checked.

E2E NEXT

What changes matter during replacement?

E2E NEXT includes broad DC 3-wire and DC 2-wire lineups with multiple body sizes and connection formats.

E3Z PHOTOELECTRIC

Model selection cross-reference

For the current E3Z family, the most useful cross-reference is often not a lifecycle successor table but a model-function table. The following pairs are OMRON lineup counterparts (for example NPN vs PNP or pre-wired vs connector) — not statements that one model is the successor of the other.

ALTERNATIVE BRANDS

When an alternative brand can be considered

If the project specification does not require OMRON, a cost-down alternative can be evaluated, but the alternative should be selected from the actual electrical and mechanical conditions rather than from a seller's "same size / same distance" claim.

Lower-risk candidatesHigher-risk candidates
Standard inductive proximity sensing; simple photoelectric presence detection; non-safety applications with accessible commissioningSafety sensors; high-speed counting; difficult reflective targets; oil/washdown environments; tight mechanical tolerances; IO-Link diagnostics; machines already validated around specific OMRON behavior

For an OEM batch conversion, validate a sample on the machine before locking the BOM.

HOW WE HELP

The ElecBridge sourcing assessment

  1. Check original OMRON model availability and whether the requested reference is current, legacy or discontinued.
  2. Use OMRON-published replacement information where it exists.
  3. Compare the actual electrical/mounting/application conditions before calling the replacement usable.
  4. If OMRON is not mandatory, separately evaluate a Chinese alternative and clearly mark any parameter or mounting difference.

FAQ

OMRON sensor cross-reference — frequently asked

Q.01
What replaces OMRON E2E-X5E1 2M?
OMRON's discontinued/recommended-replacement database lists E2E-X5C118 2M for E2E-X5E1 2M. Final use should still verify output, mounting, wiring and the actual machine input.
Q.02
What replaces OMRON E2E-X18ME1-M1?
OMRON recommends E2E-X18MC130-M1 for the legacy E2E-X18ME1-M1 connector model. Confirm the full suffix, wiring, mounting and application before ordering.
Q.03
Is E2E NEXT a direct replacement for every old E2E sensor?
No. E2E NEXT is the current migration family for many models, but exact output, connection, sensing and mounting conditions must be verified.
Q.04
What is the PNP version of E3Z-D61?
Within the OMRON E3Z lineup, E3Z-D81 is the PNP counterpart to the pre-wired E3Z-D61 diffuse-reflective model.
Q.05
Can I replace an OMRON NPN sensor with PNP?
Not without checking the PLC/input wiring and control architecture. NPN and PNP outputs are not interchangeable by model number alone.
Q.06
Can a Chinese sensor replace an OMRON E2E or E3Z?
Often in standard non-safety applications, but selection should match sensing method, electrical output, distance, mechanics, environment and connector/wiring, then be validated on the machine.
