For many ABB ACS550 general-purpose drive applications, ACS580 is ABB's intended migration platform — but it should never be selected by HP or kW rating alone. This guide walks through ABB's official model mappings, option/fieldbus changes and the checks worth confirming before you order.

For many ABB ACS550 general-purpose drive applications, ACS580 is the migration path ABB itself points to. But an ACS580 should never be selected only by matching the old drive's HP or kW rating. Before ordering, verify: the exact ACS550 type designation, motor power and rated current, supply voltage and duty requirement, enclosure/protection class, existing option modules and fieldbus, mechanical dimensions and mounting, and control wiring / parameter settings. ACS580 is a migration path for many ACS550 applications — not an automatic drop-in replacement.
ABB's ACS550-to-ACS580 comparison guide organizes the work into two practical stages:

ABB states that the ACS550 208–240 V single-phase 50% output-current derating rule should not simply be applied to ACS580. Use the ACS580 single-phase selection ratings instead.

Do not assume an ACS550 option module can be physically transferred to ACS580. Confirm both hardware and communication compatibility before ordering.
If the existing ACS550 uses an encoder module, ABB's comparison guide directs the application to ACS880 because ACS580 does not provide an encoder card.
The original ACS550 may make sense when production must restart immediately and exact stock is available, wiring/PLC changes are undesirable, a validated legacy configuration must be preserved, or a short-term spare strategy is the priority. ACS580 migration may make sense when the equipment will remain in service long term, future lifecycle and spare support matter, control-system modifications are acceptable, or multiple ACS550 units are being standardized/modernized together.
For an ACS550 request, we can separately check: original ACS550 China-side availability; ABB's official migration path and the candidate ACS580 / ACS880 platform; migration risks across current, dimensions, fieldbus, options, wiring and application; and — where ABB compliance isn't mandatory and the application supports it — an alternative-brand option.
